Composite Materials

Eclipse utilizes proprietary composite nano-materials within the composite laminate to enhance the RF reflective properties – particularly at frequencies >20GHz. Secondarily applied conductive paints or metallized coatings are not necessary when using Eclipse’s proprietary laminate recipes. The increased stiffness of Carbon Fiber materials has enabled weight reduction up to 70% and facilitated greater precision on the parabolic surface when compared to aluminum. Carbon Fiber materials have a much lower Co-efficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) which reduces parabolic surface distortion due to thermal gradients across the reflector surface.

Wind Load Analysis

Eclipse can generate a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis to determine the wind loads acting on the antenna reflector. The CFD pressure fields generate by these analyses will be mapped to the nodal locations of the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) model. The worst case load conditions are typically incorporated into the structural FEA model to determine resultant deflections. The resultant deflection map will lead to a RMS value under extreme service conditions.

Finite Element Analysis

The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) model is typically created to evaluate structural integrity, survivability and RMS distortion from extreme environmental conditions. In addition to structural integrity and general survivability, FEA can provide the RMS displacement response to assist in technical assessment of dish dimensional stability. This analysis will be conducted using the wind loading, dish orientations, and environmental requirements defined by the customer. FEA and/or testing may validate the composite dish configuration meets the strict displacement requirements for the reflective surface.

Mechanical / CAD Design

Eclipse Composites provides mechanical design solutions for petal-to-petal and petal-to-hub interfaces. Customer’s may use their own feed connection/mounting design or use one of Eclipse’s configurations. Eclipse utilizes SolidWorks for CAD modeling and will provide a full drawing/documentation package for all products supplied.
